Weather Woes: Vegetable Prices Rise, Tomatoes Buck the Trend in Nagpur
In Nagpur, strange weather has made veggies more expensive, but tomatoes are actually getting cheaper. The recent unexpected rains have hit local farmers hard, making veggies pricier all around.
Ram Mahajan, who helps run the Mahatma Phule Adatiya Association, says veggie prices have shot up by 10 to 30 percent because of the weird weather. But here’s the twist – tomatoes are now cheaper because there are lots of them around.
Farmers are feeling the pinch as their crops get damaged. This means it’s tougher for families too, as budgets get messed up with the higher prices.
But there’s some good news too. Because of the rain, we'll have veggies for longer, maybe even until May. This could help both shoppers and farmers.
In the markets, prices for other veggies are jumping all over the place. Green chilies cost Rs 30-35 per kg, coriander Rs 25-30 per kg, and cabbage Rs 10-12 per kg. But tomatoes, which are usually pricey, are now a bargain because there are so many of them.
And guess what? Even though the local crops are struggling, we’re still getting tomatoes from other places like Sangamner, Nashik, Bangalore, and Madanapalle in Andhra Pradesh.
Lemons are also seeing price changes, selling for Rs 450 to Rs 500 per 100 pieces.
This situation shows that farmers are tough and markets can adapt, even when the weather goes crazy. While it’s tough now, things might get better soon.
