When Vir Das receives an International Emmy two years after being branded a "terrorist and traitor," he remarks, "The universe is full circle."
After being called a traitor to his country, comedian Vir Das made Indians proud on Tuesday by taking home an International Emmy Award. In his second nomination, Das won for his most recent stand-up special, Landing. Following the release of his Two Indias video, he became embroiled in the largest controversy of his career a few months before to the special's premiere. Almost two years have passed since the video's online debut.
He was nominated alongside fellow Indians Jim Sarbh and Shefali Shah, and at the presentation he shared the International Emmy with the Irish comedy series Derry Girls. At the presentation, producer Ekta Kapoor received a special International Emmy Directorate Award as well.
He recently discussed his identity at the Indian Express Adda, saying, "I am an Indian citizen." Indian identity is woven into every fiber of my being. However, that does not imply that I share your perception of India. I can't choose just one version of India because there are too many of them.
Das released a statement after winning an International Emmy, describing the occasion as "truly surreal" and "an incredible honor that feels like a dream." Earning an Emmy is significant not only for me but also for Indian comedy in general. The worldwide reception of Vir Das: Landing is encouraging, and much of this can be attributed to Aakash Sharma, Reg Tigerman, and Netflix.
It has been a difficult and fulfilling path for me to write local stories to win an international award, and Netflix has been a major contributor to that development. India brings you to the International Emmys and Noida, so I'm thrilled by the ongoing investigation of varied tales.
