Yellow Alert: Heavy Rains Expected in Vidarbha Due to New Weather System
Vidarbha is set to experience heavy to very heavy rains over the next week because of a new low pressure system forming over the Bay of Bengal. This weather pattern, influenced by the La Niña effect, is bringing unusually strong monsoon rains for September.
The Regional Meteorological Office warns that the low pressure system, currently moving towards North Andhra Pradesh and South Odisha, will result in widespread downpours. This comes after August’s rainfall, which was above average and caused significant disruptions. The heavy rains may impact upcoming crop harvests.
On Friday, Vidarbha saw heavy rain, with some areas receiving a month's worth of rain in just one day. In Nagpur, rainfall was uneven, with central areas experiencing heavy showers while the outskirts had lighter rain. The rain has created large puddles on roads due to poor drainage and road conditions, raising concerns about increased mosquito-borne diseases like chikungunya.
The ongoing rains have further damaged Nagpur’s roads, which had already been in poor condition. Recent road repairs have struggled to hold up under the heavy rain, and the quality of these repairs has been criticized.
The weather system is expected to strengthen into a depression over the next 36 hours. Rainfall today has been widespread in Vidarbha, with light to moderate showers. Temperatures are likely to stay above normal in the coming week.
Today's rainfall totals include 6 cm in Narkhed, 1 cm at Nagpur Airport, and 7 cm in Ghatanji, Yavatmal district.
